ITDS students Visit NCA

On the 7th of March, 2025, the department of Information Technology and Decision Sciences received approval from the Vice Chancellor Professor Elvis Asare-Bediako to embark on industrial visit. This idea was initiated by Professor Peter Appiahene with the support of the dean of school of Science to give practical knowledge to the students as it is done each year. In all, total of 90 second-year Diploma Information Technology (IT) students from the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), based in Sunyani, embarked on an educational visit to the headquarters of the National Communications Authority (NCA) in Accra. This visit was part of a broader academic initiative aimed at bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom and the practical realities of the tech and communications sector.

The tour was organized to provide students with firsthand exposure to the regulatory framework and operational dynamics of Ghana’s communications industry. Led by their lecturers, Dr. Michael Opoku and Mr. Jacob Mensah, the students engaged in an enriching learning experience that included a series of in-depth presentations delivered by experts from the NCA. These sessions highlighted the Authority’s core responsibilities, including its role in regulating electronic communications, ensuring fair competition among service providers, and safeguarding consumer interests. As part of the visit, students were given guided tours of some of the Authority’s critical operational units. These included the Broadcasting Monitoring Centre, where they observed how the NCA monitors radio and television content nationwide; the NCA Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), responsible for managing cybersecurity incidents and protecting national digital infrastructure; and the Common Platform, which is used to monitor telecom traffic and ensure transparency and accountability in revenue generation.
