ITDS students Visit NCA - 2025

The first year Diploma students offering Information Technology, totaling 118 students from the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani campus, have undertaken an educational field trip to the National Communications Authority (NCA) to gain firsthand knowledge of the Authority’s operations, regulatory functions, and role in Ghana’s communications sector.

The educational visit, organized by the Department of Information Technology and Decision Sciences (ITDS), was led by Dr. Michael Opoku and Mr. Jacob Mensah, both lecturers in the department. The trip formed part of the department’s efforts to expose students to the practical aspects of information and communication technologies and to connect classroom learning with industry practice. During the visit, officials of the NCA provided a comprehensive presentation on the Authority’s mandate, regulatory framework, and operational departments. Students were taken through interactive sessions highlighting key functions such as spectrum management, frequency allocation, quality of service monitoring, and consumer protection. The NCA team demonstrated how advanced technological systems are used to monitor network performance, detect interference, and ensure compliance among telecommunication operators. Students also toured the Data and Monitoring Center, where they witnessed real-time tracking of communication signals and data management processes.

Speaking after the session, Dr. Michael Opoku commended the NCA for its openness and hospitality, noting that the experience would greatly enhance students’ understanding of how theory translates into real-world ICT regulation. Mr. Jacob Mensah also emphasized that such field trips bridge the gap between academic learning and professional exposure, inspiring students to aspire toward careers in technology regulation, network management, and cybersecurity. Students expressed excitement about the visit, describing it as both enlightening and motivating. They noted that seeing how the NCA safeguards communication infrastructure and promotes fair competition deepened their appreciation of the complexities of Ghana’s digital ecosystem. The field trip to the NCA underscores UENR’s continued commitment to providing experiential learning opportunities that prepare students for leadership and innovation in the ICT sector.
